Abstract

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a life-threatening and rare vascular anomaly may present as unexplained acute profuse intra-oral or gingival bleeding of unknown origin. It may arise from an abnormal fusion of arterial and venous system during embryogenesis. This case report describes a 9-year-old female who presented to the pediatric dental unit regarding unexplained intra-oral, gingival bleeding which resulted in severe hypovolemia within 24 hours and collapse, subsequently being diagnosed as AVM. Urgent referral, thorough investigations, prompt diagnosis and urgent multidisciplinary team approach helped in clinical management. Surgical treatment was undertaken followed by psychological support for the patient and family, speech and language therapy and continual follow up plans of reconstruction. This case report aims to spread awareness
amongst general and emergency dentists to look beyond the simple dental clinical picture and undertake a holistic approach.
